Surplus
More of something that is needed. Farmers could produce a surplus because of irrigation
Civilization
An organized society that functions within established geographic boundaries. Civilizations have different social classes
Fertile Crescent
A large arc of rich or fertile farmland. The Tigris and Euphrates rivers made this land so fertile.
Priests
A person who performs religious ceremonies and had great status in Sumer. People relied on them to help them gain god’s favor
Epic
A long story that tells the story of a hero. Epics are poems, and they wrote one on the great Sumerian king Gilgamesh.
Canal
Man-made waterway that transfer water to irrigation systems. Canals made irrigation possible
Silt
Material that is carried by running water like clay, sand, and dirt. Rivers brought silt to the land and that made the land so fertile.
Irrigation
A way of supplying water to an area of land. Irrigation gifted Sumer with a surplus of crops.
Rural
Most Sumerian people were farmers, and lived in rural places. Rural means countryside area
Urban
A city area. The center of Sumer was the most urban.
Cuneiform
System of writing used in the ancient Middle East
Division of labor
Separation of the tasks in any economic system or organisation so that participants may specialise
Social hierarchy
Systems of social organization in which some individuals enjoy a higher social status than others
Polytheism
Belief in or worship of more than one god.
Empire
A group of nations or peoples ruled over by an emperor, empress, or other powerful sovereign or government
