What is the pathophysiology of IBD via transmural infarction?

A
  • Regardless of whether arterial or venous side is occluded, the infarction appears haemorrhagic because of blood reflow to the damage area.
  • Within 1-4 days intestinal bacteria produce gangrene and perforate bowel.

What is the clinical presentation of mesenteric embolism or thrombosis?

A
  • pain of infarction = severe + continuous
  • quickly develops all hallmarks of peritonitis.
  • generalised pain + vomiting
