What is the pathophysiology of IBD via transmural infarction?
A
- Regardless of whether arterial or venous side is occluded, the infarction appears haemorrhagic because of blood reflow to the damage area.
- Within 1-4 days intestinal bacteria produce gangrene and perforate bowel.

What is the clinical presentation of mesenteric embolism or thrombosis?
A
- pain of infarction = severe + continuous
- quickly develops all hallmarks of peritonitis.
- generalised pain + vomiting

What is a typical history of a patient with a mesenteric embolism or thrombosis?
A
- angina,
- MI,
- intermittent claudication,
- TIA / stroke.
