3.3: Mercutio realises the war between the houses is stupid

A

“A plague o’ both your houses”

This would have had extra impact, as during the Elizabethan era, everyone would have known someone who had died from the plague.

3.3: Comedy, playing on Tybalt’s title, wishing death upon Romeo, foreshadowing

A

“‘Zounds, a dog, a rat, a mouse, a cat to scratch a man to death!”

Tybalt called himself the “prince of cats”, therefore by saying “a cat to scratch a man to death”, he could be wishing that Tybalt kills Romeo, or just stating he has been killed by Tybalt.
