Mercantilism
the idea that the colonies should be established for the benefit of the mother country (i.e. to make them rich)
What is the belief in mercantilism?
it was believed that Great Britain should only trade with its colonies and vice versa in order to help Great Britain keep its wealth to itself
What is the aim in mercantilism in the colonies?
an aim of British mercantile policy was to force American merchants to provide raw materials to Britain only.
Mercantilism worked like this:
The American colonies would grow raw materials that were traded back to Great Britain
The raw materials were used to create manufactured goods.
The manufactured goods were sold back to the colonists for their use.
Why did Americans resent the mercantile system?
resented the mercantile system because it limited their trading partners and forced them to accept lower prices from British traders.
