Mental Status Examination (MSE) Flashcards
Purpose of MSE
- to identify, diagnose & monitor signs & symptoms of mental illness.
- reflects a person’s psychological functioning at a given point in time.
MSE components:
ASEPTIC
- Appearance & Behaviour
- Speech
- Emotion
- Perceptions
- Thought Process = includes suicidal ideations
- Insight
- Cognition = Mini Mental State Examination
Akathisia
inner restlessness with inability to stay still
Automatism
spontaneous verbal or motor behaviour without pt awareness
Dystonia
twisting/repetitive movement or abnormal fixed posturing
Echolalia
meaningless repetition of another person’s spoken words.
Depersonalization
loss of all sense of identity, wherein one’s thoughts & feelings are no longer felt to be one own.
Derealization
a change in the perception or experience of the external world to where it feels unrealistic.
Illusion
a misinterpretation of existing stimuli
e.g. a child who preceives tree branches at night as if they are goblins/monsters.
Cognition - Mini Mental State Examination
= components
- Orientation x4 (person, time, place, situation)
- Attention & Calculation = WORLD backwards, serial 7s from 100, add/subtract
- Language = naming objects, repeating sentences
- Memory/Recall = name the objects mentioned before
- Copying = draw the same picture.
Scores in MMSE
(NICE)
Normal = 25-30
Mild impairment = 21-24
Moderate impairment = 10-20
Severe impairment = <10
