What is a mental disorder?
Any person with an abnormal state of mind, characterized by delusions or disorders of mood, perception, volition, or cognition.
- Poses serious danger to the person or others.
- Seriously diminishes the capacity of that person to take care of himself or herself.
What is a restricted patient?
Restricted patient is when a person is subject to a Cumpolsory Treatment Order but is still considered to present a danger to the public.
What is a special patient?
Patients who are detained by way of a court order.
Criminally insane, unfit to plead.
Also includes people on remand for psychiatric reports.
What is the minimum age for a person to apply for a mental health assessment of another person?
18 Years Old
What state of mind does a mental disordered person need to be in?
Abnormal.
If a restricted patient absconds or is absent without leave from the hospital, what’s the time frame to bring them back?
At any time.
If a special patient absconds or is absent without leave from the hospital, what’s the time frame to bring them back?

If a CTO patient absconds or is absent without leave from the hospital, what’s the time frame to bring them back?

What happens if you don’t find a CTO within 3 months?
A new application for assessment must be completed.

What is a DAO?

- Qualified Nurse who has specialised in Mental Health.

Police Power to Assist a Duly Authorised Officer (DAO).
Section 122B of Mental Health Act 1998
Use the reasonable force (as necessary) for:
- detaining a person, proposed patient, or patients in Sections 41, 109, 110.
- Power to take or retake a person, proposed patient, or patient.
- Power to enter premises in Section 41 or 110.
Can you use force when transporting a patient?
Yes BUT need to make sure the assessment notice has been served on them and explained to them.
Who is responsible for arranging the transportation of the Patients?

How to avoid Positional Asphyxia?
Make sure patients are not transported in the prone position.
Make sure their airways are clear (nose, mouth) and they can breathe properly.
