When is onset? How long can it last?
New time moms
Onset is 3-5 days from birth
Can last up to 6 weeks postpartum
What are postpartum blues like?
Will it go away?
Depression with happy moments
- so not constant
It’ll go away either on its own or with support
Best care for postpartum blues?
Reassurance Rest Supportive environment and people - emotionally and with household duties She needs to be able to take care of herself and the baby
Does postpartum blued impaired functioning?
No it shouldn’t so if that’s happening, there’s a sign something deeper is wrong.
Mental health disorders related to PG?
Depression
Psychosis
Post partum depression
Who is this common in?
More serious than postpartum blues bc it is disabling to the point she can’t care for herself or kids
- 1/8 moms
- common in first PG
What is onset like of postpartum depression?
It is delayed bc it can be an extension of the blues .
6-12 months but it can happen 4th week os postpartum so there’s no real timeline. Just that it persists
Common causes of Post partum depression?
Hormone changes from PG
Stress or major life events
Lack of support
What type of hx means increased risk of post partum depression?
What happens if mom has no support?
Hx of depression before PG or depression and anxiety during PG.
No support = increased risk of depression
Who is at greater risk? older or younger women
What relationship factors can increase post partum depression?
Adolescents
Bad relationship w partner
- domestic violence
What stressors can cause post partum depression
Child care stress
Life stress
What is a personal reason the woman may have post partum depression>
Lack of satisfaction with herself f
