Mental illness
A mental disorder that affects one or more functions of the mind, can interfere with a persons thoughts, emotions, perceptions and behaviour
Mental health
State of emotional and social wellbeing. A person can cope with everyday stressors, realise their own potential and can work productively.
Sociocultural normality
Behaviour that is accepted in a particular society eg. Married to one person at a time in Australia
Abnormality
A pattern of thoughts, feelings or behaviours that is deviant, distressing or dysfunctional.
Deviant
When the behaviour is considered different from the social or cultural norm.
Distressing
When thoughts feelings or behaviours are unpleasant and upsetting to the person experiencing them”
Dysfunctional
Thoughts feeling or behaviours that interfere with a persons ability to carry out daily activities.
Biopsychosocial framework
Describes how biological, psychological and social factors combine and interact to influence a persons physical and mental health.
Strengths and limitations of categorical approach
Disorders are arranged in a particular manner and order
Consistent diagnoses from hospital to hospital
Does not accommodate for atypical symptoms, boxes people into categories.
Strengths and limitations of dimensional approach
Does not label individuals
Can see improvement quicker
Greater inconsistencies
argument about how many dimensions exist.
Stress
A state of physiological arousal produced by internal and external stressors that are perceived as exceeding a persons coping abilities.
Physiological response to stress
Involuntary major and minor changes in bodily functions that occur when we become aware of a stressor.
Fight or flight response
Involuntary reaction resulting In a state of physiological readiness to deal w a threat by confronting it or running away.
HPA axis
Hypothalamus stimulates the pituatary gland which produces ACTH ( adrenal glands).
Increased heart rate, blood pressure and respiration rate makes more oxygen available for fight or flight response
Eustress
Positive psychological response to a stressor.
