Outward expression of the clients emotional state
Blunted
Little or slow to respond facial expression

Facial expression incongruent with mood or situation
Restricted
One type of expression, usually serious or somber
Thought Process
How the client thinks, can assess through speech and patterns
Thought Content
What the client actually says
Circumstantial Thinking
Eventually answers the question, but after giving excessive unnecessary detail
Delusion
Fixed, false belief not based in reality
Flight of Ideas
Excessive amount and rate of speech composed of fragmented or unrelated ideas
Ideas of Reference
Believes general events are personally directed at them
Loose Association
Disorganized thinking that jumps from one idea to another; no evident relationship between the thoughts
Tangential Thinking
Wandering off topic; never providing information requested
Thought Blocking
Stopping abruptly in the middle of sentence or train of thought
Thought Broadcasting
Delusional belief that others can hear or know what they are thinking
Thought Insertion
Delusional belief that others are putting ideas or thoughts into their head; none of the thoughts are the clients
Thought Withdrawal
Delusional belief that others are taking clients thoughts away and they cannot stop it
Word Salad
Flow of unconnected words that convey no meaning to the listener
