Depression rates
3% in childhood and 14% in adolescents
Evaluate for depression if
weight changes insomnia/hypersomnia psychomotor agitation fatigue feeling of guilt can't concentrate thoughts of death
Exam for depression includes
appearance motor activity mood language thought content suicidal ideation insight into problem developmental status decisions being made
Interviewing parents and children with suspected depression
should be separately
Should rule out
other diseases with TSH, CBC, CMP, monospot
If drug therapy for depression used in adolescents
close supervision
takes 4-6 weeks to notice effects
try cognitive therapy as well
PTSD in children
caused by traumatic event in their lives, in someones life close to them or with something they witnessed
PTSD symptoms
sleep dist. depression feeling jittery or on guard easily startled loss of interest trouble with affection aggression avoidance flashbacks losing touch with reality physical symptoms (HA, stomach ache)
Tx PTSD
early detection and intervention
cognitive therapy
may need pharm management for anxiety and/or depression
Bullying goal
to gain control over another child using verbal, written or physical aggression

Adults and bullying
Toleration by adults seems to be the most important factor. It is NOT part of growing up
Treat bullying
Its a team effort.
