What are SSRIs used for? (3)
(selective serotonin reupdate inhibitors)

- depression
- Panic disorders
- Obsessive compulsive disorders

What are the common side effects of SSRIs? (4)
A
- GI - nausea, changes in appetite
- sleep disturbance
- Possibility of hypersensitivity - skin rash
- Lowers sodium - especially in the elderly which could be a cause of confusion
- Increase risk of bleeding

What are very important considerations with SSRI prescribing? (50
A
- Risk of hyponatraemia, especially with the elderly.
- Risk of bleeding, especially with the elderly
- Increase in suicidal thoughts/ behaviour at the beginning
- Overdose - Serotonin Syndrome
- Caution with epilepsy - prolongs QT interval.

What must you advise a patient before starting on a SSRI?
A
- Expect an improvement after a few weeks
- Treatment is long-term (min. 6 months)
- Don’t stop medication suddenly otherwise will get withdrawal symptoms (sleeping problems, nausea)
