Menstrual Cycle Flashcards
How long is the menstrual cycle and approximately what day does ovulation occur?
The cycle lasts 28 days with ovulation occurring on day 14.
Explain the menstrual cycle.
The hypothalamus stimulates the pituitary gland to release FSH. This causes the follicle to grow. The follicle secretes oestrogen when they are big enough. Mature follicles cause the pituitary gland to release LH. This surge in high levels of LH triggers ovulation. The follicle releases the oocyte and becomes the corpus luteum. The corpus luteum secretes progesterone.
What happens to the menstrual cycle if pregnancy dosent occur?
The corpus luteum degenerates into the corpus albacam. This causes oestrogen and progesterone levels to fall which results in the period.
Explain menstruation, proliferation and sectretion phase.
- Menstruation is when hormone levels are low.
- Proliferation is when the endometrium is growing.
- Secretion is when the endometrium is grown and the blood vessels can give the baby the correct nutrients.
