Menstrual cycle Flashcards
What are the two cycles?
Ovarian and Uterine cycle
What is the ovarian cycle?
It is the cycle that happens in the ovaries
What happens during the ovarian cycle?
The release of hormones follicle development and release of eggs occur
What is the menstrual cycle?
Is the cycle that happens in the uterus.
What occurs during the menstrual cycle?
The growth of endometrial tissue ,blood and nutrients supply to tissues and shed off the tissue if no implantation occurs
what is the development of the graafian follicle?(ovarian cycle)
Primary follicle matures
FSH develops into graafian follicle
ovulation? ( ovarian cycle )
Follicle matures and enlarges
Luteinising hormone is released which causes the Grafton follicle to rupture
formation of corpus luteum? (ovarian cycle)
After ovulation, graafian follicle changes into corpus luteum.
Corpus luteum contains large amount of progesterone and oestrogen.
Changed in the endometrium? ( uterine cycle)
oestrogen secreted from maturing follicles
oestrogen and progesterone released from corpus luteum. Which causes endometrium to thicken, become more vascular
Menstruation? (uterine cycle)
High levels of oestrogen and progesterone inhibit the release of FSH and LH
Corpus luteum degenerates, Progesterone decreases and eventually stops.
No hormones to maintain the endometrium, the lining breaks down into pub
Menopause?
The ovaries stop producing oestrogen and progesterone.
Symptoms of menopause.
Hot flushes, sleep problems, memory loss, weight gain and bone mass loss.
