Virus (coxsackie, echo, herpes, mumps)
fungi, protozoa & other parasites
what is meningococcal disease
infection with neisseria meningitidis
2 main manifestations: meningitis or septicaemia
Neisseria meningitidis epidemiology
carried by 10-24% population
humans = only reservoir
transmission: respiratory droplets/naso-pharyngeal secretions
Incubation: 2-10 days (usually 3-4)
most common october - may
Meningococcal septicaemia presentation
fever & chills
fatigue
vomiting
cold hands & feet
severe aches & pains
rapid breathing
diarrhoea
dark purple rash (later)
complications
death
blindness
deafness
brain damage
amputation
gangrene/arterial occlusions
is it notifiable
yes on suspicion
public health approach
notification
contact tracing
prophylaxis
- contact school etc - standard warn & inform letter
Epidemic?
huge epidemics in meningitis belt of SSA
