What are the 3 types and what are they caused by?
Acute (bacterial), subacute (viral), chronic (fungal)
What are the common bacteria that cause meningitis?
Strep pneumoniae, Neisseria meningitidis, Haemophilus influenzae, Tuberculosis meningitis
What are the common viruses that cause meningitis?
Enterovirus, HSV, HIV, varicella-zoster virus
What are the common fungi that cause meningitis?
Cryptococcus, Aspergillus
What are the symptoms?
Headache Fever Neck stiffness Photophobia Rash Nausea and vomiting Confusion
What are the clinical features?
Kernig’s sign (lift leg, pain)
Brudzinski’s sign (lift neck, patient lifts legs)
Non-blanching rash
What are the investigations?
Bloods - FBC, U+Es, LFTs, CRP
Lumbar puncture
What does the CSF look like in viral?
Clear
Low protein
Normal glucose
What does the CSF look like in bacterial?
Turbid High protein Low glucose High WCC High pressure
What is the management?
Bacterial - IV abx (Ceftriaxone)
Viral - Aciclovir IV
Fungal - IV clotrimazole
What are the complications?
Abscess Cerebritis Deafness Hydrocephalus Death
