Meninges, CSF Flashcards
Dr. Austin's content
Central sulcus
separates the frontal lobe and the parietal lobe
Precentral gyrus
location for primary motor
Postcentral gyrus
location for somatosensory
Parietal lobe
responsible for sensory input such as touch pressure, heat and cold.
temporal lobe
responsible for memory, auditory, emotions, language and some visual perceptions
What are the meningeal layers from superficial to deep?
- Dura mata
- Arachnoid mata
- Pia mata
What are the two layers of the dura mata?
Periosteal layer and the meningeal layer
When the dura mata splits what is formed in between the layers?
The Superior sagittal sinus
What structure in the superior sagittal sinus uptakes or absorbs the CSF
arachnoid villi
Finger like projections from the arachnoid mater that uptakes CSF and drains it back into the superior sagittal sinus?
Arachnoid vili
What artery supplies the lateral part of the dura mata?
middle meningeal artery
Where is the superior sagittal sinus located?
It runs front to back below the dura mata
Where is the confluence of sinus located
Confluence of sinus is located in the back of the skull after the superior sagittal sinus
What drains into the confluence of sinus?
The transverse sinus
What can happen to the emissary vein if someone gets a hard blow to the cranium?
Emissary viens are located in the spongy bone called diploe and travel down to the dural sinus.
A hard blow to the head can rupture the emissary vein carrying blood away from the brain and dural sinus
Where does CSF flow?
In the subarachnoid space
What is the function of CSF
Protects the brain and provides nutrients
Inferior saggital sinus drains into which sinus?
The inferior sagittal sinus drains into the straight sinus
Where does the superior sagittal sinus drain?
It drains into the confluence of sinus
Where is the cavernous sinus located?
There is one on both side of the pituitary gland
What connects the two cavernous sinus?
Inter-cavernous sinus
What drains the cavernous sinus?
Superior and inferior petrosal sinus
Where does the superior petrosal sinus drain into?
Superior petrosal drains into the transverse sinus
Where does the inferior petrosal sinus drain?
Inferior petrosal drains into the sigmoidal sinus
What does the transverse sinus change its name to and where?
Transverse sinus changes its name as it travels medially and inferiorly on the tantorium cerebellumto the sigmoidal sinus as it goes through the jugular foramen.
Sigmoidal sinus becomes what vein?
The sigmoidal sinus becomes the internal jugular vien.
Where does the emissary vein drain?
Superior sagital sinus
Where does the straight sinus and great vein of Galen drain?
confluence of sinus
Where is the pia mata located?
directly on the brain and spinal cord
Leptomeninges
arachnoid mata and pia mata
Circle of Willis
anastomosing of the internal carotid arteries and the vertebral arteries (from subclavian)
a total of 4 arteries
ventral side of brain
in subarachnoid space
What artery from the internal carotid is not a part of the Circle of Willis?
The middle cerebral artery
What gland is found between the circle of willis?
The pituitary gland
Why is the optic chiasm can be compressed?
It is near the circle of willis
Where are aneurism common in the circle of willis do to 90 degree turn
anterior communicating or posterior communicating artery
ischemic stroke locked in stroke
basilar artery obstruction
Medial medullary syndrome
associated with the anterior spinal artery.
Ataxia of the limbs, difficulty swallowing, loss of facial sensation, difficulty speaking
Occlusion in ICA
Lateral pontine syndrome
PICA
Lateral medullary Wallenberg syndrome
rare, horner syndrome, vertigo, difficulty swallowing
veins draining the spinal cord
retro flows into the azygus and hemi azygus on the posterior thoracic wall and drain in the posterior vena cava
Which of the following arteries gives off the meningeal branches near the foramen magnum to supply the cerebelli?
the vertebral artery
