Mendelian Genetics Flashcards
Why did Mendel choose to conduct his studies using peas?
Quick generation types, lots of offspring, small, easy to grow
Gene
A unit of inheritance
Allele
The alternative forms of a single gene
Mono hybrids
Individuals with two different alleles for a single trait
Dominant is hidden or shown?
Shown
Recessive is hidden or shown?
Hidden
Mendel’s law of segregation
The two alleles for each trait separate during gamete formation, in fertilization of two gametes, one from each parent, unite at random
Phenotype
A physical manifestation ex. Yellow or green peas
Genotype
A pair of alleles in an individual
Mendel’s law of independent assortment
During gamete formation, different pairs of alleles segregate independently of each other. Example- Y Is just as likely to assert with R as it is with r and vice verse for y
Product Rule
the probability of two independent events occurring together is the product of their individual probabilities
Ex. P(1 and 2)= probability of event one x probability of event two
