Q

What ‘contexts’ make transcription factors ‘context’ dependent?

A

Different cell types and different binding sites can cause it to act differently (activator or repressor)

Q

Promoter v Enhancer (Promoter)

A
Where basal transcription factors bind
Usually directly adjacent to the gene
	Include transcription initiation site
	Often have TATA box
Allows for basal level of transcription

Q

Promoter v Enhancer (enhancer)

A

Alter the activity of the promoter
Can be far away from the gene
Can augment ore repress the basal level of transcription
Can make more mRNA or less depending on the activity of what binds to said enhancers. Enhancers be close to the gene of interest or far away and a specific gene may have many different enhancers.

Q

What is the purpose of basal transcription factors?

A

Basal transcription factors assist the binding of RNA polymerase II to promoters

Q

What is the order of assembly of basal TFs?

A

You have the TATA box, the TATA box binding protein or TBP binds to the TATA box. The TATA associated factors (TAFs) bind to the TBP assembled at TATA box. Then the RNA polymerase II binds to TAFs
