Mendelian Genetics Flashcards
What are the 2 types of Variation? Describe them
- Continuous Variation: due to an infinite amount of traits (spectrum)
- Discrete Variation: only two or few traits to a given character
What is the law of independent assortment?
Alleles of different genes assort independently of each other
Two types of syndromes/diseases due to improper segregation of sex chromosomes?
- Turner’s Syndrome: XO
- Klinefelters: XXY
What does hemizygous mean?
Only having one allele for a certain characteristic.
Example: males and colour blindness gene
Example 2: Sheida and being ugly
What affects recombination rate?
- Recombination depends on distance!
- The further apart tow genes are on a chromosome, the higher chance they will recombine.
- If two genes are close on a chromosome, then they are very closely linked
What does polygenic/multigenic mean?
When multiple genes may contribute to a trait. This means that someone could have two penises/vaginas.
What does Epistasis mean?
When the expression of a gene is affected by the expression of one or more independently inherited genes.
