Mendel And Heredity Flashcards
Alternative forms of genes
Allele
Allele that is the most often expressed in an organism
Dominant
Allele that is expressed only when a dominant allele is not present
Recessive
Alleles that are identical to each other
Homozygous
Alleles that are different from each other
Heterozygous
holds that one from the pair of alleles coding for a particular trait would be expressed whereas the other is unexpressed. The allele expressed for a particular trait is regarded as the dominant whereas the other is considered recessive.
Law of dominance
each member of a pair of homologous chromosomes separates independently of the members of other pairs so the results are random
Law of independent assortment
allele pairs separate during gamete formation, and randomly unite at fertilization.
Law of segregation
any pair of genes that tend to be transmitted together
Linked genes
The set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment.
