Memory Research Flashcards
Baddeley aim
To investigate how we code info in stm
Baddeley procedure
Showed ppts list of words if 4 categories
Acoustically similar
Acoustically dissimilar
Semantically similar
Semantically dissimilar
Had to recall list in correct order straight after
what did Baddeley find
More mistakes on acoustically similar list
What did Baddeley study other than the coding of stm
Coding of LTM
What did Baddeley conclude
Stm codes acoustically, LTM codes semantically
Miller aim
To investigate the capacity of stm
Miller procedure
Digit span technique. Strings of unrelated digits increased by one each time. Had to recall to the point they couldn’t recall in right order
Miller findings
Ppts could recall 5-9 items, more if items were chunked
Miller conclusion
Stm can hold 5-9 items
Peterson and Peterson aim
To investigate the duration of the stm
Peterson and Peterson sample
24 undergraduate students
Peterson and Peterson procedure
Ppts presented with consonant trigram. Then three digit number and asked to count backwards to prevent rehearsal, stopped at points to recall trigram.
Peterson and Peterson findings
After 3 seconds, only 80% recalled the trigram correctly. After 18 seconds, fewer than 10% recalled correctly
Peterson and Peterson conclusion
Info in stm lasts 18-30 seconds unless rehearsed
Bahricks aim
To investigate duration of LTM
