Q

what does the MSM explain memory

A

all info goes through the sensory register into the STM with attention to the info - then after prolonged rehearsal and retrieval, the info goes into the LTM

Q

what does the MSM contain

A

the order in which it goes is the following: stimuli from the environment, into the sensory register (which has a seperate store for the 5 senses eg. iconic for vision), after attention has been paid to the info it enters the STM, through maintenance rehearsal and response the info is moved into the LTM.
the info, if needed, can be recalled but it has to be moved back into the STM, this is done through retrieval.

Q

evaluation of the MSM

A

P - + - Research support -shows that STM and LTM are different
E - Baddeley - his research on acoustic and semantical similar and dissimilar words
T - shows different stores - validity

P - counterpoint - L - despite the research, in everyday life we form memories related to all sorts of useful things - last names, faces etc.
E - the research did not use this - instead digits (jacobs) and words (baddeley)
T - MSM may not be a valid model of how memory works in everyday life
