memory: long term memory Flashcards
what are the 3 types of LTM
Episodic, Semantic and, Procedural
how came up with the idea of the 3 types of LTM
Tulving
explain what the 3 types of LTM consist of
Episodic memory refers to the ability to recall from event in our lives - likened to a diary. it is time stamped and you have to make a conscious effort to recall them
Semantic memory contains the shared knowledge of the world. not timestamped and less personal than the others
Procedural memory is the memory for our skills or actions, how we do things. DON’T have to have a conscious effort to recall. becomes natural over time eg. driving a car
evaluation of the types of LTM
P - + - the case study of Clive Wearing
E - his episodic memory was severely impaired due to brain damage due to an infection, however his semantic memories remained and also procedural too - he still knew how to walk and also how to play the piano
T - supporting Tulving’s view of the different LTM stores
P - + - Real-world Application - understanding types of LTM allows psychologists to help people with memory problems
E - as people age they experience memory loss , but research shows that this is specific to episodic memory. Belleville devised an intervention to improve episodic memory in older people
T - this shows that distinguishing the differences between the types of LTM helps specific treatments to be created
