Memory: Multi-store model Flashcards
What are the different types of memory?
- Sensory register (SM)
- Short Term Memory (STM)
- Long Term Memory (LTM)
Describe sensory register/memory
- Initial contact for stimuli.
- SM only capable of retaining info for a very short time
Describe STM?
- The info we are currently aware of or thinking about.
- Info found in STM comes from paying attention to sensory memories.
Describe LTM?
-Continual storage of info which is largely outside of our awareness, but can be called into working memory to be used when needed.
What is the process of MSM of memory?
- Info comes into sensory memory.
- If we pay attention it goes into STM.
- Info is rehearsed in STM, and goes into LTM.
- If its not rehearsed it is forgotten.
What are the three factors that differentiate between the stores?
- Capacity
- Coding
- Duration
What is ‘capacity’
How much info this store can retain
What is ‘coding’?
The form in which the the memory is retained.
What is ‘Duration’?
How long this store can retain info for.
Describe the coding of the 3 stores?
Sensory = 5 senses STM = Acoustic LTM = Semantic
Describe the capacity of the 3 stores
Sensory = A lot but not for long STM = 7+ -2 (5-9 hrs) LTM = Unlimited
Describe the duration of the 3 stores?
Sensory = 1/2 sec STM = 30 secs LTM = Unlimited
Who discovered the multi-store model
Atkinson and Shiffrin 1968
What tests capacity of STM?
- Joseph Jacobs developed the digit span technique.
- Millers magic 7
What is Elaborate Rehearsal?
In STM where if you keep repeating info it will be passed into LTM
