Memory Lecture wk 8 Flashcards
Definition of “Learning”
process by which new knowledge is ACQUIRED
Definition of “Memory”
process by which that knowledge is RETAINED and RETRIEVED
Briefly, describe the pathway of memory stores
Stimulus–>Sensory information store (SIS)–>Short term memory (STM) –> Long term memory (LTM)
True or False
SIS stores only sensory input with no interpretation
True
General role of STM
- Stores an interpretation of the image
- Filters out the information which is not important to you
- Stores acquired information in hierarchy order (most important –> least important)
What are the 2 main types of information stored?
Declarative (Facts, events, rules) - Explicit
Procedural (Motor) - Implicit
Where does Declarative information stored in the brain for STM and LTM
STM = Hoppocampus LTM = Cortical sites dependent on the stored information
Where is Procedural information stored in the brain for STM and LTM
STM = Widespread unclear LTM = Motor cortex, Cerebellum, Basal ganglia
Description of Hippocampus
i. e - location
- general roles
- located in the medial temporal lobe
- stores declarative memory
- transfer information from STM to LTM
- bring previous memories back to conscious thought
