Primacy-Recency effect
The observation that one remembers the information presented from the beginning and end is better retained than information from the middle.
Definition: Memory
Information that has been stored, persists over time, and is recalled.
Three types of remembering
Recall, recognition, re-learning
Working memory
Working memory is the term used to describe the theory that has superseded short term memory.
Important in cognitive Psychology. The idea that information can be held for a short time to manipulate it ie maths problems.
Definition: Chunking
The idea that putting numbers or letters into something recognisable makes it easier to remember. ie making letters into works.
Three stages of memory
Encoding, Storage, Retrieval
Associative memory
The ability to remember the associations between two different and unrelated objects.
Definition: False Memory
Refers to incidents of memory that are different from actual events. These “false memories’ are indistinguishable from “real” memories in the mind.
Good for memory in relation to study.
Retrieval practice
Distributed practice
Interleaving
