Memory and Language Flashcards
Which area(s) of the brain are thought to be involved in episodic memory?
Primarily hippocampus, but additionally medial temporal lobe based on findings from brain injury patients.
Which area(s) of the brain are thought to be involved in semantic memory?
Posterior (and anterior) parietal lobes.
What is anterograde amnesia?
Inability to form new memories.
What is retrograde amnesia?
Can not access episodic memory.
What impairment do you get in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE)?
Episodic impairment.
Which type of memory is used in autonoetic consciousness, and what is it?
Episodic memory. Autonoetic consciousness is mentally placing yourself in the past, present and future.
How is OCD believed to be related to memory?
Remember to know shift: increasing distrust of and reliance on memory exacerbated by checking habits.
Which area of the brain is activated in episodic AND semantic processing.
Prefrontal Cortex
What is familiarity?
A semantic notion that is fast and automatic. We know something (i.e. we recognise it but can not recall the context in which we encountered it (lacks episodic component)..
What is recollection?
Remembering the context of a memory (episodic). This is slower and requires more attention. Can occur spontaneously through retrieval cues (e.g. proustian moments- involuntary reminders of past event)
In hippocampal patients, which is most impaired?
A. Recollection
B. Recall
C. Familiarity
B. Recall
What is deja vu?
A mix up between familiarity and recognition.
What is binding and where does it occur?
Making associations between objects and context to support recollection. Occurs in the HPC.
What is the serial order of encoding a memory?
Procedural > Priming > Semantic > Primary (Working Memory) > Episodic
In what way are memories A) stored and B) retrieved?
- Serial
- Independent
- Parallel
Stored in parallel, retrieved independently.
