Memory Flashcards
What is explicit memory?
Conscious recollection
LT memory for facts and events
What is implicit memory?
Forms of LT memory that influence behaviour
Do not involve conscious recollection
What are the four forms of implicit memory?
Procedural memory
Priming memory
Associative learning
Nonassociative learning
What is procedural memory?
Knowing HOW to perform certain actions.
Memory for skills such as playing instrument, riding a bike etc
What is priming memory?
Type of implicit memory
The processing of a stimulus is influenced by the prior presentation of a stimulus related to it
What is associative learning?
Classical and operant conditioning
What is nonassociative learning?
Habituation and sensitisation
Why are the two forms of explicit memory?
Episodic memory
Semantic memory
What is episodic memory?
Concerned with personal experiences or events occurring in a given place at a specific time
Characterised by autonoetic awareness
What is autonoetic awareness?
The awarenesss that allows us to be aware of the subjective time when an event occurred
What is semantic memory?
Fork of explicit memory concerned with memory of general knowledge about the world, including concepts, language etc
What is Alzheimer’s?
A decrease in episodic memory
Anterograde and retrograde amnesia
Implicit memory in tact
What is anterograde amnesia?
Inability to remember anything new after onset of amnesia
What is retrograde amnesia?
Inability to remember events occurring prior to the onset on amnesia
What is semantic dementia?
Issue with semantic memory
Damage to anterior temporal lobes
Loss of information about the meanings of words, concepts and facts
