Memory (7) Flashcards

Q

Memory

A

The nervous system’s capacity to retain and retrieve skill and knowledge. Enables organisms to take information from experiences and store it for later use.
The information we store and the memories we retrieve are often incomplete, biased, distorted.
All experiences are not equally likely to be remembered.

Q

Encoding

A

The process of information so that it can be stored. Occurs at the time of learning, as information is transformed into a format that can be stored into memory. The brain changes information into a neural code that I can use.

Q

Storage

A

The retention of the encoded representation. A change in your nervous system registers what you just experienced, retaining it as a memorable event. Neural connections that support memory become stronger, and new synapses are constructed. There are at least 3 storage systems.
