Memory Flashcards
Encoding
Getting info into memory, attention, focusing awareness
What is selective attention and why do we use it
Filtering. Filtering out irrelevant stimuli.
Storage
Involves maintaining encoded info in memory overtime
Retrieval
Involved recovering info from memory storage
What is pseudoforgetting and what causes it
Fake forgetting, failing to remember because of lack of encoding (forming a memory)
How does pseudoforgetting contribute to next in line effect
You think about what you’re going to say, so you forget what the person before you, and after you, say.
Do we filter out all irrelevant stimuli equally?
At some unconscious level you are paying attention to what people are saying. If youre with your friends and hear your name being said at a party, you want to know what they’re saying
What are the different levels of processing
Shallow processing, intermediate processing, deep processing.
Which level of processing produces better/worse memory
Best- deep processing. Worst- shallow processing
How can you improve memory
Elaboration- linking a stimulus to other info (e.g., thinking of examples)
Visual imagery- two ways to remember
Self-referent encoding- making info personally meaningful (coming up with own examples)
Survival encoding
What are the different types of memory storage
Sensory, short term, and long term
Sensory memory
Auditory/visual, approximately 1/4 of a second. Preservation in memory form. Some argue not really memory.
What is short term memory
Limited duration, about 20 seconds.
How can you maintain something in short term memory
Rehearsal/repeating can make it last longer.
How much can be stored in short term memory
Limited capacity (7+/-)
