memory Flashcards
hindsight bias
inclination to see past events as more predictable than they actually were
misinformation effect
memory becomes less accurate because of interference from post-event information
RÉTROACTIVE INTERFÉRENCE: occurs when information presented later interferes with the ability to retain previously encoded information (maybe because of cognitive dissonance??)
introverts more likely to have lower confidence in their memory and therefore more likely to accept misinformation; empathy too
mood-congruent memory bias
improved recall of information congruent with ones current mood
peak-end rule
people seem to perceive not the sum of an experience but the average of how it was at its peak and how it ended
spotlight effect
tendency to overestimate amount people notice your appearance and or behaviour
zeigarnik effect
incomplete or interrupted tasks are better remembered than completed ones
framing effect
drawing different conclusions from the same information, depending on how it is presented
what are implicit memories
retrieved without conscious awareness, automatic response to a stimulus (links w cerebellum in motor skills in response to riding a bike)
how do memories change with age
episodic memories decline, semantic and implicit memories remain unchanged
