Q

what is epigenetics

A

study of heritable changes in gene expression that to not involve changes to the underlying DNA sequence - a change in phénotype but not in genotype, which in turn affects how cells read genes and hence them being active or inactive. epigenetics determines which proteins are transcribed

Q

give 3 examples of epigenetics

A

children born during the period of the dutch famine 1944-45 havé increased rates of coronary heart disease and obesity after maternal exposure to family during early pregnancy; also higher incidence of schizophrenia

childhood abuse and other forms of early trauma also seem to affect dna methylation patterns, helping to explain poor health that victims of such abuse face in adulthood

Q

epigenetics markers

A

différent ones tell proteins in the cell to process those parts of the DNA in certain ways; eg methyl groups stick to C letters; there are proteins that seek out to bind to methylated areas and shut it down so that genes in that region are deactivated METHYLATION= deactivates
