Memory Flashcards
Memory
The persistent in learning over time through exposing, retrieval and storage of information
Encoding
The processing of information into the memory system
Storage
The retention of encoded information over time
Retrieval
The collection of information from the memory system
Sensory memory
The representation of a physical feature in a stimuli that is stored for a very brief time
Deja Vu
The brain malfunctioning or unintentional blindness
Decay
Losing memory over time due to lack of rehearsal
Implicit memory
Skill sets or learning of a particular set. Cannot be mentally recalled but affects physical behaviour
Eidetic memory
All sensory memory
Photographic memory
A visual memory recall
Primacy
Remembering the first few words
Recency
Remembering the last few words
Explicit memory
Conscious retrieval and storage of personal experiences
Semantic memory
Collections of meanings, understandings and concept cases on knowledge. Gives us a general understanding of the world and allows us to recollect factual information. Emphasises the meaning of verbal input
Short term memory
Information encoded from sensory input in first transferred into stm through attention. Only 7 +/- 2 items can be held for a period of 30 seconds
Episodic memory
Collections of particular personal memories that occurred at a specific time and space
Working memory
Allows us to manipulate material in short term memory
Phonemic memory
Emphasises what a word sound alike
Structural encoding
Emphasises the physical structure of the stimulus
Long term potentiation
Long lasting enhancement of the bonds between two neurones that results to a store get memory formulation
