Memory Flashcards
Memory
Studying memory involves understanding how things are remembered and why things are forgotten
Sensory Memory
lasts only for a few seconds; forms the connection between perception and memory
Iconic Memory
Sensory memory for vision
George Sperling
found that people could see more than they can remember.
Partial Report
sensory memory lasts for a few seconds and in the time it takes you to write down a part of it you have forgotten the rest
Ulric Neisser
coin the term icon for brief visual memory lasts 1 second
Backward Masking
when a pattern is flashed before the icon fades it will be erased and works for auditory as well. Best if mask is similar to icon
Ghost trails
you sensory information is remaining briefly in your awareness and because the object is moving quickly it appears as running together
Echoic Memory
Sensory memory for the auditory sensations
Short term memory
temporary and lasts for seconds or minutes; largely auditory and items are coded phonologically
Working Memory
temporary memory that is needed to perform the task that someone is working on at the moment
George Miller
Short-term memory has the capacity for 7 items +/-2
Chunking
Grouping items that can increase the capacity of short term memory
Rehearsal
repeating or practicing is the key to keeping things in short term memory and transferring items to long term memory
Primary rehearsal
(Maintenance) involves repeating material to hold it in STM
