A
  1. Sensory input
  2. Encoding
    - coverts sensory input into a into a usable code that can be stored in memory
    - e.g. lightwaves or sound waves into a format or code that our brain can work with later
  3. Strorage
    - holds encoded information for a period of time, which can be later retrieved
    - humans can store vast amounts of information in their long term memory, so can the hard disk of a computer
  4. Retrieval
    - locates stored information and returns it to consciousness when needed
    - humans retrieve information via prompts or queues and computers preform retrieval in a similar way
