Memory Flashcards
Who created the multi-store model?
Atkinson and Shiffrin’s 1968 model
How does the model suggest information is stored in the LTM?
Info reaches our senses from environment + enters memory system through sensory register
Some info from sensory register is picked up by process of attention + passes through to STM
Info can indefinitely be kept in the STM through maintenance rehearsal
If we think about the meaning of the info in the STM- process known as elaborative rehearsal- info becomes coded semantically and passes to LTM store which has an unlimited capacity
What is 1 key claim from the MSM Model?
1) Each store is unitary: each is one store with no separate parts
What is 2 key claim from the MSM Model?
2) Each store is separate to the others, we know this because their features are different to each other in terms of capacity, duration and coding. Suggesting 1 store can be damaged when the other is not
What is capacity?
The amount of information a store can hold at any one time
What is coding?
The way information is changed so that it can be stored in memory(the format which it is stored)
What is duration?
The length of time information can be held in memory
What is the sensory register?
What are the other sensory stores?
-The haptic store for what you feel
-The gustatory store for what you taste
- The olfactory store for what you smell
What are the two main parts to the sensory register?
1) The iconic store- visual information(what you see)
2) The echoic store- auditory information(what you hear)
What is the capacity, duration and coding of the Sensory register?
Capacity- unlimited
Duration- Limited
Coding- Unprocessed form
What is the key study for the sensory register?
Capacity and Duration in the sensory register Sperling (1960)
What are the 3 types of long term memory?
Episodic, Semantic, Procedural
What is episodic memory?
