Memory Flashcards
Who created the MSM?
Atkinson and Shiffrin
(1968)
What are the 3 MSM stores
Sensory register
STM
LTM
Describe CODING
different information types the brain uses to store memory
Describe CAPACITY
how much info can be held by a store
Describe DURATION
how long information can be held in that store for before loss
What happens in the sensory register
- 5 main senses detected by sensory neuron and received by brain
2.sensory info from senses is recorded automatically, info passed on to STM by paying ATTENTION - STM passes info to LTM through REHEARSAL- maintenance rehearsal or elaborative rehearsal
- Info is passed back from LTM with RETRIEVAL, and info can be lost via DISPLACEMENT(new info).
Describe the sensory register
- not under COGNITIVE CONTROL like STM or LTM
-all info found in stm/ ltm were initially gathered by sensory reg
Sensory register (coding, cap, duration)
CODING-modality specific
CAPACITY- very large, unlimited?- contains all sense impressions for all senses in the moment, only what is paid attention to is passed to STM
DURATION- very low, low as 250 milliseconds( so much info held, cant be retained for long)
How can the capacity of STM be improved?
by CHUNKING info= reduces number of items overall
Difference between maintenance rehearsal and elaborative rehearsal
Maintenance- repeating the information
Elaborative- linking to information already in LTM
