Q

Describe the multi-store model of memory

A
  • is a linear model suggesting that all memory stores are separate and unitary - information enters sensory register, has a large capacity but very brief duration (milliseconds), is coded sense specific
  • if we pay attention this information enters STM, capacity of 5-9 pieces of information, duration of 18-30 secs and is coded acoustically
  • transferred to LTM, has unlimited capacity, lifetime duration, coded semantically
  • information may be recalled from LTM into STM for easy retrieval

Q

Describe the procedure in the study for coding in STM and LTM

A

Baddeley
Procedure
Gave different list of words to 4 groups of participants to remember
Group 1- acoustically similar (hat,cat)
Group 2- acoustically dissimilar
Group 3- semantically similar (big,huge)
Group 4- semantically dissimilar
Participants were shown original words and asked to recall them in certain order
