memory Flashcards
research on coding, and findings
Baddeley
gave word lists to 4 groups
Group 1 - acoustically similar words
Group 2 - acoustically dissimilar
Group 3 - semantically similar
Group 4 - semantically dissimilar
Participants were shown word lists and asked to recall immediately in correct order
They did worse on ACOUSTICALLY SIMILAR WORDS
he asked them to repeat word lists again after 20 an interval recalling from LTM - they did worst on SEMANTICALLY DISSIMILAR WORDS
evaluation of research on coding
STRENGTH BADDELEY
he identified clear difference between 2 memory stores. idea that STM = Acoustic + LTM = semantic has stood for a long period of time
LIMITATION BADDELEY
used artificial stimuli instead of meaningful material
word lists have no meaning to participants - not applicable to real world scenarios
