Memory Flashcards
What is Memory?
process of retaining information over time
What is 3 stages of memory process?
- encoding
- storing
- retrival
What is encoding?
transforming information into memory
what is storage?
maintaining information into memory
What is retrieval ?
taking information out of memory store
What are the two ways we can retrieve memory?
+ what is both of it?
- recall = when you remember something without having to be reminded for e.g your friends’ birthday
- recognition= when you remember memory when your shown it again or it feels familiar to you
What is capacity?
Amount of information we can store in the memory
What is duration?
how long a memory can be stored before it gone
what is coding?
what format it is stored in
What is sensory coding?
what are two types of sensory coding
storing sensory information
acoustic- hearing
visual - looking at it
what is semantic code?
storing info by it meaning
what is sensory register?
list 3 things.
- has sensory store
- duration 1-2 seconds
- large capacity
What evidence can we use to support sensory register?
Sperling method
1. he conducted a lab experiment to investigate capacity of sensory register
- he showed participants 4 by 3 grid with letters for 50 milliseconds
- he had two different groups and tested their recall. one of groups had to recall amount letter they can remember. the other group had recall one of the rows but they told which row to recall by tone in the background.
