memory Flashcards
recall everything
-witness is asked to report all details on the event even if it seems trivial
-might act as a trigger to a memory
context reinstatement
-witness asked to mentally place themselves back at the scene of crime, imagine the environment and their emotions
-uses context/state dependent cues to help trigger memories which may appear forgotten
recall in reverse
-witness is asked to report what happened in a different chronological order
-prevents witnesses reporting what they expect to happen (schema) and prevents dishonesty as it’s harder to lie
recall from changed perspective
-witness is asked to recall the incident from another persons perspective who witnessed the crime
-prevents schema
cognitive interview intro
-fisher and geiselman developed the cognitive interview
-technique used by police to interview witnesses to get most accurate recall
-used open questions, witness is not interrupted and free to expand on their own answers
cognitive interview RTS
-conducted by Kohnken et al
-meta analysis of 55 studies comparing cognitive and standard interviews
-cognitive interview has 41% increase in accurate information
-only 4 studies showed no difference among the type of interview
-therefore supports idea that cognitive interview is an effective technique in improving EWT
