Memory Flashcards
Memory is organized by
encoding, storing and retrieving
Encoding is the process of
organising sensory information so the brain can process it.
This requires ATTENTION
Storage involves maintaining the information available in memory
Retrieval
Divided attention
during encoding hurts our memory
3 memory stores
are SENSORY memory, LONG-TERM memory and SHORT-TERM MEMORY
Sensory memory involves
iconic and echoic memory,
Iconic memory
is our visual memory
holds 4 plus/minus 2 bits of information
Echoic memory
what we hear. Holds about 6 bits of information
Long term memory
lasts forever and has an unlimited supply
Working memory
where active thinking takes place. e.g solving a math problem.
Information proccessing model describes memory like
a file on a computer
Information proccessing model limitation:
memories are often fuzzy and fragile.
Also, computers process one piece of data at a time ,while human memory can process a lot of information at the same time
Short term memory
15-30 seconds it lasts
holds millers magic number.
Memory
requires attention.
can only be put into long term memory through repitition.
