memories Flashcards
what is short term memory?
short term memory is a type of memory where limited information is stored in the brain for a limited time.
what is long term memory?
long term memory is a type of memory where unlimited amount of information can be stored for a few minutes or even a lifetime.
what type of encoding does short term memory use?
short term memory use acoustic encoding.
what type of encoding the long term memory usually use?
it usually uses semantic encoding.
why information in our short term memory can be forgotten?
it can be forgotten because when it reaches the amount of storage capacity in out short term memory we, the new information will push the old information out and replace it, this is also called displacement.
why information in our long term memory can be forgotten?
it can be forgotten because the information is decayed as the memory trace is not used.
the old memory is overwritten by a new memory (interference)
the link to the information is lost.
what is amnesia?
amnesia is memory loss which is usually caused by accidents involving the brain
how many types of amnesia is there?
two types of amnesia
name these two types of amnesia
anterograde amnesia and retrograde amnesia
what is anterograde amnesia?
anterograde amnesia is where the patients cannot store anymore long term memory, but has intact short term memory
what is retrograde amnesia?
retrograde amnesia is where the patient cannot remember or recall the information before the accident, in some severe cases the patient will knot remember wo he is, where he is from, and the others around him.
