King Charles II formed the Duke of York and Albany’s Maritime Regiment of Foot. For the specific purpose of service afloat.
side note- the yellow stripe in the Regimental flash commemorates the Duke of York and Albany’s Regiment.
When was the capture of Gibraltar?
24th July 1704,
A brigade of 1800 British and Dutch marines under the command of Prince George of Hesse-Darmstadt. In October 1704, the French and Spanish besieged the fortress which had a 400 marine strong Maritime Brigade. The siege was raised on the 9th of March 1705
When was the Battle of Trafalgar?
21 October 1805-
90 Officers, 3,600 NCOs and men of the RM.
On nelsons’ flag ship, 4 RM officers, and 27 men killed or wounded.
In total 4 officers and 117 RMs died and 14 officers and 226 RMs wounded.
When was the Battle of Belle Isle?
7th of June 1761-
The first successful seaborne landing, under Lt Col. John McKenzie. 2 Battalions of Marines.

17 June 1775-
took 3 attempts and a reinforcement of a Marine Force and the 47th Regimen. Under General Sir William Howe.
When was the Battle of Gallipoli
28th of April 1915-
the 3rd RM Brigade landed to dismantle the Turkish Defensive positions. 13 days of fighting ensued ending on the 3rd of May 1915. We Won.
when was the The Raid on Zeebrugge?
23rd of April- 1918
9 officers and 109 NCOs and men lost their lives. While 233 were wounded and 13 taken prisoner. The entrance to the canal was successfully blocked and the Mole, destroyed. 2 VCs were awarded.
When were the Landings of Normandy?
6th June 1944-
16000 RMs took part, 5 Distinguished service orders,
3 OBEs, 13 Distinguished service Cross, 10 Military Crosses, 1 conspicuous gallantry medal, 26 Distinguished service Medals and 13 Military medals were awarded.
9 officers and 85 men were killed.
When was the assault on Walcheren?
1st Novemeber 1944-
when it was captured, the port of antwerp was opened and the momentum of the advance to berlin started again!
