Birth of the Corps

-Originally: Duke of York and Albany’s maritime regiment of foot
Capture of Gibraltar
24 July 1704
-Carried out by British and Dutch marines under command of George of Hesse-Darmstadt
-Following October, was besieged by French and Spanish
-Marine brigade backed by a furthger 400 marines defended the fortress against repeated attacks until the siege was raised on 9th March 1705
-Captain Fisher, with 17 of his men, defended the Round Tower against continued assaults of 500 French grenadiers.
Belle Isle
17 June 1761
-Two batallions of marines, under command of Col John Mackenzie served in siege of the island north west of France
-With 19th regiment, the two battalions affected their first successful seaborne landing
Bunker Hill
17 June 1775
-American forces occupying dominant high ground north of the two hills in Boston
-two attacks launched both unsuccessful
-marine force under Maj John Pitcairn consisted of the first and second batallions, suffering casualties of 29 killed and 87 wounded, led to third attempt being successful.
Trafalgar

-HMS Victory took heavy losses
-French Marksman killed Lord Nelson, with RM Sergeant James P Secker noted to carry his body below deck

Galipoli
28 April 1915
-In feb/march landed on peninsula to dismantle Turkish positions
-Both Plymouth batallion and 1 RN Brigade engaged in continuous heavy fighting
-Chatham and Portsmouth batallions counter attack drove Turkish forces back in May
-Parker awarded VC
-21 officers, 217 men killed

Zebrugge
23 April 1918
-4th batallion RM led by LtCol BN Elliot DSO took leading part in gallant enterprise against the German Naval Base
-RMLI companies held position, blocking entrance to the canal and destroying the mole
-9 officers 109 NCOs died
-233 all ranks were wounded, 13 taken prisoner
Walcheren

-Little support owing to weather, other then that provided by naval support craft
-landing success was due to self-sacrifice and gallantry of the naval support craft, after some days the batteries covering the mouth of Scheldt were captured
-Clearing entrance to the river was one of great importance to teh Allied Armies in Flanders
Normandy

-16000 RM -> largest amphibious operation in history
-two army commandos into two special service brigades
-Corps played leading role into establishing secure beach fronts. from which subsequent efforts were developed to defeat the Germans
Falklands
Recapture of the Falklands - 14th June 1982
-Began April 2nd
-42 commando recaptured South Georgia on April 25th
-From 1 May SBS carried out intelligence patrols
-Main landing by 3 Commando Brigade, reinforced by two parachute batallions and other sub army units
-Major general JJ Moore in San Calls assume command of all land forces
-3 Commando Brigade bore most fighting

Operation Jacana
April 16th- July 9th 2002
As part of the global war on terror, the Royal Marines were deployed to Afghanistan in 2002. Operation Jacana was one of several operations where the Marines conducted mountain warfare and counterinsurgency operations.
Operation Herrick
