Membranes Flashcards

1
Q

what are the 3 main functions of a plasma membrane?

A
  • control transport of substances in and out of the cell
  • act as a receptor site

10
Q

what does the bilayer do ?

A

acts as a barrier to polar, charged, and water soluble molecules
it allows non polar, uncharged and soluble molecules to pass through

14
Q

what do glycolipids act as?

A
  • recognition sites

- help maintain the stability of the membrane and help attach to one another (form tissues)

16
Q

what do cholesterol do ?

A

restricts movement of other molecules making up the membrane and increases strength and stability of membranes by making them less flexible

17
Q

what does the role of cholesterol help do?

A

prevent water loss and dissolved ions from the cell

18
Q

why is the fluid mosaic model given its name ?

A

Fluid refers to the fact that all the different molecules can move around.
Mosaic because there are different types of molecule – the proteins and carbohydrates ‘float around’ within the phospholipid bilayer.
