membranes Flashcards
membrane
thin sheet of tissue or layer of cells acting as a boundary, lining or partition in an organism
types of epithelial membrane
serous, mucous and cutaneous
epithelial membrane structure
covers or lines internal structures or cavities and composed of epithelium
epithelial membrane function
-to protect underlying tissue
-absorption
-secretion
-reception of sensory info
epithelial membrane location
lines cavities that are exposed to the external and internal environment
cutaneous membrane
skin
cutaneous membrane function
-to prove a barrier between external and internal environment
-prevent entry if foreign substances. PROTECT
mucous membrane
openings of the body eg. digestive, genitourinary and respiratory tract
mucous membrane function
-protection. acts as a barrier to external agents
-traps foreign particles
-lubrication. movement of substances
Serous membrane
double layered sac. visceral and parietal
serous membrane function
-secrete a lubricating fluid to decrease friction
-hold organs in place
visceral
type of serous membrane that is closest to the organ - on the outside of the organ (VOO)
parietal membrane
type of serous membrane that is further away from organ - inside the cavity (PIC)
connective membrane eg
synovial membrane eg. elbow and knee
synovial membrane location
lines the cavity of the joints that move and the surrounding tendons
synovial membrane function
-to decrease friction from damaging tissue by secreting synovial fluid which acts to lubricate
