Membrane Dynamics Flashcards
1
Q
Functions of the plasma Membrane
A
- Physical barrier- defines the boundary of the cell, structural support.
- Controls the passage of materials from inside to outside and from outside to inside the cell.
- Communication between the cell and its environment, governs interaction with other cells
- Maintains the difference in chemical composition between the intercellular and extracellular fluid.
2
Q
Molecules that can pass through membrane
A
Oxygen, water, lipids, carbon dioxide
3
Q
Molecules that require a channel
A
Ions, water
4
Q
Molecules that require Carriers
A
Glucose, amino acids, ions
5
Q
Permeable
A
Allows substance to pass through
6
Q
Impermeable
A
Membrane does not allow it to pass
7
Q
Which bio-molecules are components of the Fluid Mosaic Model of the Plasma Membrane
A
Proteins, phospholipids, Cholesterol, Glycolipids/Glycoproteins
8
Q
Functions of the Membrane Proteins
A
- Structural- maintains the shape of the cell
- Enzymes- catalyze chemical reactions
- Receptors for hormones and other signal molecules
- Transporters of molecules across the cell membrane
9
Q
Carrier Proteins
A
- Glucose and amino acids cross membrane only by carriers
- Very Selective about what they transport
- Slower transport than channel proteins
- Carrier proteins are open to one side of the membrane or the other but NOT both.
10
Q
Intracellular Fluid
A
within the cells
11
Q
Extracellular fluid
A
outside the cells
12
Q
Extracellular fluid is further divided into:
A
plasma and interstitial fluid
