Phrase
denoted by letters (a, b, c, etc.). Similar but not identical repetitions are denoted with prime indicators (a prime, a double prime, a3)
Sentence
Three phrases that belong together, the last of which is equal in length of the first two. 1+1+2.
Period
Two-phrase group, Antecedent and consequent.
Antecendent phrase
left inconclusive, due to a weak, deceptive or half cadence.
Consequent Phrase
Finishes with a stronger cadence, binding two phrases into a group.
Parallel Period (a and a’ prime)
Consequent begins identically or similarly to the Antecedent.
Contrasting Period (a, b)
Consequent begins differently than the Antecedent.
Double Period
Four-phrase group, wherein the last two phrases complete the first two.
Parallel Double-period
The third phrase is similar to the first. (a, b, a, b’)

Contrasting double period
The third phrase is different than the first. (a, b, c, b’)
(a, b, c, c’)
Phrase group
Two or more phrases that belong together, perceived as building a larger unit. (Period, sentences, double periods)
Pre-Cadential Extension
Delayed arrival of the end of the phrase usually through an evaded cadence
Post-Cadential Extension
Continuation of a phrase after the cadence, extending the phrase longer than expected.
