How do you label large formal areas?
Capital letters
Binary form
Two parts: A, B.
Simple Sectional Binary
first A section is closed with an authentic Cadence
Simple Continuous Binary
first A section is harmonically open. Half Cadence, Deceptive Cadence or a new key.
Rounded Binary
May be sectional or continuous. (A, B, (A’) ). B section is harmonically open and concludes with material similar to A section though not usually a full restatement.
Ternary form
A, B, A. Different than Rounded Binary in that the B section is Harmonically closed.
Rondo form
A, B, A, C, A or longer five or more
A section always returns in-between contrasting sections (A can be varied or in another key and concludes the work)
